The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has accepted the VanEck 19b-4 form for a bitcoin ETF application, officially opening a 45-day window for an initial decision.
If approved, the ETF would be the first of its kind in the U.S., though there has been a long-standing demand for such a product, as seen in the launch of the ETF in Canada. Historically, the SEC has rejected all applications for bitcoin ETFs, including past VanEck efforts, citing the possibility of market manipulation and a host of other problems.
Nevertheless, experts believe that the SEC may finally approve an ETF under new chairman Gary Gensler, former chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), who has been quite optimistic about cryptocurrency and blockchain while teaching technology courses at MIT in recent years.
