The geek forum itself restored the code of the infamous Tornado Cash mixer. Conducting transactions through the mixer remains illegal, though.
Last week, the Treasury Department clarified that sanctions against Tornado Cash do not apply to the project code. With this, the judges only stumped everyone. After all, it turns out, the code is not under sanctions, but you can't use it.
Just to remind you, on August 8, the U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Tornado Cash addresses. This caused GitHub to ban the service accounts and its developers almost immediately.
At least one high-ranking person has come out in favor of restoring Tornado Cash. Ethereum core developer Preston Van Loon insisted that the ban be lifted on September 13. He noted that GitHub has "lifted the ban on Tornado Cash and participants on [its] platform."
Tornado Cash's return to GitHub does not mean that development of the coin mixer will continue as usual. All pages under the project's main profile are marked as public archives, a status that can be removed but which implies that development in the future and for the time being is prohibited...
