On this day, March 28th, 1776, the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow was founded. A well-known patron of the arts, Prince Pyotr Urusov, who was also the provincial prosecutor of Moscow, received an imperial charter signed by Empress Catherine II, granting him the right “to establish an acting troupe” and to host “plays, masquerades, balls, and other entertainments” for a period of ten years. This date is considered the official birthday of the Bolshoi Theatre.
