Influencers will be punished hard!

Today, in 2012, Wikipedia shut down its English-language site for one day to protest against an anti-piracy bill being debated in the US. Of course, stealing is very bad. But the term "theft" is often used to describe things that are not theft. Open Source essentially gave us the Internet as we know it now - could we have built the World Wide Web without free access to the information? No.

The Comisión Nacional del Mercado de Valores (CNMV), the government agency responsible for the financial regulation of the securities markets in Spain, issued a release on Monday defining the new rules.

So-called influencers or organisations with more than 100,000 subscribers will now have to notify CNMV of the content of cryptocurrency-related promotions at least ten days in advance. They will also have to state that the investors could lose all their money. 

Fines for non-compliance are capped at €300,000 and could be doled out to crypto companies, PR firms and individual influencers. The new rules will come into force in February.

Postings related to "bitcoin," "blockchain," "Ethereum," and other terms surged 395% between 2020 and 2021, according to LinkedIn. By comparison, the broader tech sphere "saw a 98% increase in listings during the same time period."

According to Instagram’s chief executive officer, Adam Mosseri, the platform is actively exploring NFTs\ and ways that it can make them more accessible to its burgeoning user base.

Walmart appears to be venturing into the metaverse with plans to create its own cryptocurrency and collection of non-fungible tokens, or NFTs.

The big-box retailer filed several new trademarks late last month that indicate its intent to make and sell virtual goods, including electronics, home decorations, toys, sporting goods and personal care products. In a separate filing, the company said it would offer users a virtual currency, as well as NFTs.
