U.S. Treasury Department says the distribution of Tornado Cash code does not violate sanctions

According to a statement from the U.S. Treasury Department, interacting with the open source code of a well-known cryptocurrency mixer is not illegal.

According to the government agency's statement, U.S. residents would not violate sanctions if they copied the mixer code, made it available online, or published it on another medium. This is such a pressing issue in the U.S. that it made it to the Treasury Department's list of most asked questions.

"U.S. persons will not be prohibited by U.S. sanctions regulations from visiting the Internet archives of the historic Tornado Cash site, nor will they be prohibited from visiting the Tornado Cash site if it becomes active again online," an excerpt from the statement.

It was heard that users generally can interact with the Tornado Cash code as long as it does not involve a banned transaction.

If you recall, Github (the kind of forum for programmers where Tornado was presented) had a policy of condemning the mixer and blocking developer accounts. At the same time, on September 8th, Coinbase announced that it would support the lawsuit against the Treasury because of illegal sanctions.
